My travel buddies decided to return to London, so I went to the capital city of Québec alone. First thing I did there was that I went to check-in to my hostel and I was a little bit scared because I really do not speak French. Owner of the hostel open the door and I, a bit frightened, asked him: "Do you speak English please?" and he responded with a smile on his face: "No, why". And we both laughed. That was the first impression from this city and for this special moment (and of course many others) I fell in love with this city immediately. By well-timed accident, there was just a man celebrating his birthday so we all met in the kitchen for dinner and cake. People from all over the world (Czech, Germany, French, Canadian and even Swiss) reunited having fun all night. It reminded me how much I love travelling alone and staying in shared hostels for couple dollars meeting new people and making new connections.
The city itself was magical, very similar to European old city centres which I miss so much. It was built in 1608 and it is the oldest city in Northern America. There can be still seen the city walls protecting inhabitants from the attacks from the river or beautiful Chateau de Frontenac, probably the most photographed hotel in the world. And about 30 minutes by public bus (3 CAD one way) are Montmorency Falls. They are higher than Niagara Falls and they were astonishing.
The atmosphere of the city was unforgettable. I would love to come back to Québec City
once again but in summer! It must be amazing to walk among the old buildings and looking down at the river. This city is not big, but it has so much to offer. Probably my most favourite city in Canada so far (apologies to other cities) although I was freezing so much there!
Must visit: Château Frontenac, Montmorency Falls, Old town, City Walls, The Citadel
Date of visit: 15.-16.4.2018
